Sondondo Valley

Introduction

This is the website for the project Sondondo Valley. Population and Territory in Rural Andean History, an interdisciplinary initiative in the Digital Humanities dedicated to organizing and systematizing historical information on the population of the Sondondo Valley (Lucanas, Ayacucho, Peru).

There is no similar experience in Peru regarding the organization and digital systematization of parish archives of this nature.

This is also the first organized archive and the first database to compile information on the population of an Andean region throughout the 19th century.

Objectives

  • To investigate the demographic, social, political, and religious history of a significant yet little-known rural area in the Peruvian Andes.
  • To develop research methods and tools applicable to similar historical sources in other areas and contexts.
  • To stimulate historical research on the populations of rural areas through the recovery, preservation, and organization of their archives.
